We are pleased to announce the call for proposals for the 37th annual MidAir Conference.
REMINDER! Best Paper winner will be awarded reimbursement up to the 2017 AIR Forum Registration cost. Registration receipt must be presented for reimbursement.
Best First Time Presenter will have the following year’s MidAIR registration fee waived. This call encourages all IR professionals, higher education faculty, and graduate students, both experienced and novice, to submit proposals to present at the conference via our online proposal system.
All proposals MUST be submitted via the internet by August 31st. The system is easy to use and will guide you through the entire process.

PDO 1: R Programming
9:00AM-12:00PM, Midland Room
This hands-on workshop is designed for Institutional Research professionals who are new to R programming. You’ll learn how to get started with R using the R Studio IDE. Topics include:
- Programming – the syntax, variables and functions, data structures
- Data Management – retrieving and loading data from local and remote locations
- Data manipulation – processing raw data into a more convenient format
- Exploratory data analysis – creating data visualizations and summary statistics
- Statistical analysis with R – regression and hypothesis testing
- R markdown – creating documents, reports, presentations and dashboards
PDO 2: Newcomers to Institutional Research Workshop
9:00AM-12:00PM, Lyric Room
This popular workshop is designed for newcomers to IR – or anyone desiring a refresher! Each Institutional Research office is a unique entity shaped by an extensive assortment of internal and external forces. If you are new to IR and wondering what you’ve gotten yourself into, this PDO may provide some insight.
Presented by two experienced IR practitioners, this half-day workshop will touch on a wide variety of IR-related issues. Our focus is on breadth rather than depth. After introductions and listening to what you would like to take away from the day, topics planned include: some definitions of Institutional Research, IR models, identifying common functions of IR offices and how they meet institutional needs, project management, ethics, common definitions, reports and surveys, national data sets, technical skills, and business intelligence and statistics commonly used in IR.
PDO 3: Google Apps for Education
1:30PM-4:30PM, Midland Room
Google Apps For Education is a powerful suite of online tools used to address Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creativity. If you are interested in learning more about these free applications, this session is for you! Topics will include:
- Customizing Preferences
- Drive organization
- Creating and Sharing: Documents, Sheets, Surveys, Draw, Calendars
- Useful Add-ons
- Virtual calls and meet ups
Please come to the session with an established gmail account and a laptop with chrome browser pre-installed to work along.
PDO 4: Power BI for Institutional Research
1:30PM-4:30PM, Lyric Room
Power BI, available through Microsoft’s Office 365 plans, is a robust and relatively inexpensive data visualization and business analytics suite. If you are interested in learning more about how Power BI can be used for higher education institutional research, this session will cover topics including:
- Data connection types offered within Power BI
- Report construction using the free desktop app
- Dashboard construction using the cloud platform
- Report sharing and organizational deployment options
- Establishing data gateways for automated refresh

The Association for Institutional Research (AIR) and the Mid America Association for Institutional Research (MidAIR) are co-hosting 2 half-day IPEDS Workshop for data providers and users in conjunction with the MidAIR 2017 Annual Conference. Financial support for this workshop is provided by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).
